Tawny Ports are a blend of young wines from various harvests, are kept for an average of two to three years in casks. They are lighter in colour than Ruby Ports and combine the fruitiness of young wines and the nuttiness derived from the maturation in seasoned oak casks. Cockburn's Fine Tawny is an elegant Port with mellow and spicy flavours. Perfect served chilled at the end of a dinner or simply to enjoy with good friends on relaxed occasions.

Cockburn's Special Reserve was originally introduced in 1969 as the first great Reserve Port, creating an entirely new Port category that was fundamental to the success of Port and the Douro over the following decades. Ruby port is a traditional style of port and Fonseca have been shipping Ruby since the company was founded over 200 years ago. Fonseca take great pride in their Ruby which has remained consistent in quality for over a century and a half.

Fonseca Tawny spends three years ageing in small wooden casks, generally holding about 630 litres. As it matures in cask, Tawny Port gradually loses the deep red 'ruby' colour of youth and takes on the seductive amber hue known as 'tawny'.

He would visit the winery and select the finest 'pipes' (500 Litre barrels) of Grand Tawny. This Grand Tawny is aged in oak barrels for an average of 12 years, and is an exquisite and rich blend of character filled varieties. Notes of dark dried fruit, raisins, dried pears, grilled nuts and spicy, toasty oak. Sweetness and acidity perfectly balanced.

The spicy fruit flavours are a legacy of the high proportion of grenache and add a lifted freshness to the more complex aged characters in the background. The palate is smooth and rich, with the mid-palate sweetness balanced by an elegant drying finish.
