On the nose, is a complex amalgam of dark berry fruit, cassis and roasted cocoa bean, lifted by more fragrant aromas of cedar, sandalwood and hints of dried lavender and thyme. The palate is full bodied with firm but fine-grained tannin and great length.

An amalgam of rich, ripe, dark fruit is overlaid with beguiling, lifted aromatics including violet, sandalwood and cedar with hints of dried woody herbs. In contrast to these lifted elements, subtle notes of cacao, vanilla and dried currant bring a luxuriousness to the aroma and flavour profile. Structurally, the wine leads with beautiful fruit weight and richness across the mid palate, typical of good Hawke's Bay Merlot. This is a multidimensional blend that simultaneously shows great depth of dark, brooding flavour whilst expressing a haunting array of gentle perfume - the ultimate expression of great Hawke's Bay blends.

Intense dark colour red with purple edge. Ripe blackberry and blueberry characters, cedar-wood and liquorice. Soft, rich, mouth coating, balanced tannin, hints of classic Cabernet, authentically Heathcote.

A deeply coloured wine with great depth and varietal definition.

Our winemakers first craft beautifully rich red wines matured in traditional wine barrels. Then using our unique double barrel technique, the wine is finished in aged whisky barrels to build additional layers of complexity and an incredibly smooth finish. Double barrel cabernet sauvignon has aromas of vanilla, nuts and varietal cassis with ground spice and leafy notes.

Lifted aromas of fresh blueberry, crushed stone, brown spice and clove lead into a rich and succulent palate framed with a core of fine tannin and a long lingering finish. 2016 Ironclad is a classic Cabernet franc and Merlot dominant blend, totally appealing in its youth but developing more savoury notes with time and always rewarding careful cellaring.

All the characteristics of the distinctive new word are captured in our South Australian wines. This wine features black currant, mulberry and vanilla bean aromas, complemented by spicy plum flavours and a lovely, long finish.

Well-regarded since launch, the Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the typical cellarability that all Penfolds wines are renowned for. The wine has excellent structure and length and while it is ready for drinking now, it will gain further complexity with short term cellaring.
